There are four 18 hole golf courses within the Machars & Rhins region of Dumfries & Galloway.
Creachmore in Stranraer itself was designed by James Braid and is of championship standard. Lagganmore near Portpatrick, Dunskey in Portpatrick itself and The County at Glenluce are also excellent courses and are only a short car journey from Stranraer.
The exotic Logan Gardens near Port Logan, being on the Gulf Stream, have many rare plants of great interest, and in the same area, there are also beautiful gardens at Logan House, and Ardwell.
Moving a few miles in the other direcion, Dunskey House near Portpatrick and Lochinch Castle, only 4miles from Stranraer also feature. Not to be missed, of course, is Glenwhan Garden with its spectacular Spring display of azaleas and rhodedendrons. All have cafe/restaurant facilities of an extremely high standard.
Fishing, both sea and loch is a popular pastime, and permits are available locally.

Days out and Sightseeing
The area is home to many excellent restaurants, and cafes with home baking regularly a speciality. Worth a special mention is the excellent cafe and visitor centre at the Mull of Galloway, Scotlands most southerly point. A must do day out for all visitors to Stranraer.
Back to Stranraer, Agnew Park is an interesting place to spend time either with the family, or just to watch the world go by, offering several outdoor attractions - the miniature train being very popular,- putting, well equipped playground, karting track, and boating pond
The Ryan Centre also in Stranraer is a wonderful option for the odd rainy day, with an indoor pool, and gymnasium. Films and shows are presented from time to time in the theatre and usually require forward booking.
For a day out with a difference, why not take a trip to Northern Ireland! Both P & O and Stena Lines operate this service on a daily basis, from the port of Cairnryan which is only a short drive along the coastline.
